Unscripted Session Notes

The art of living lies not in staying on the safe path the world offers. The art of living unfolds before us when we pull up our tent stakes and move out into the unknown.

Today’s verse of inspiration came from 1 Samuel 14:6-8. I read it from the NIV because I like how it translates the armourbearer’s reply to Jonathan. Take time this weekend and read the entire scene. It’s awesome. Someone should make a film about Jonathan’s life.

Jonathan said to his young armour-bearer, “Come, let’s go over to the outpost of those uncircumcised men. Perhaps the Lord will act in our behalf. Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving, whether by many or by few.”

“Do all that you have in mind,” his armor-bearer said. “Go ahead; I am with you heart and soul.”

Jonathan said, “Come on, then; we will cross over toward them and let them see us. If they say to us, ‘Wait there until we come to you,’ we will stay where we are and not go up to them. But if they say, ‘Come up to us,’ we will climb up, because that will be our sign that the Lord has given them into our hands.”

Questions to Consider

  1. You have something in your heart that you know God put there. What is it? The first step to moving out in faith is identifying the what. What is this thing God is nudging you towards? Write it down.

  2. Next, identify the obstacles in your heart and mind keeping you from moving out into the unknown. Write down the obstacles. This can be difficult because who likes to write down a confession of what scares us? I sure don’t. But there is great freedom in seeing it on paper and giving it to God.

  3. The art of living lies not in staying on the safe path the world offers. The art of living unfolds before us when we pull up our tent stakes and move out into the unknown. How has the world’s safe way to life crept in on you? What decisions do you need to make to move you into the wilds of God?
