Review The Beauty Chasers

Unscripted Session Notes

+ People lose hope because they fail. It’s a natural response but, arguably, a trained response. One we cultivate over time.

+The example I used in the session was anything you might try to accomplish as part of a new year’s resolution. Say a person begins the year with great intentions to get fit and work out regularly. What happens? One week goes by, and they stick to the plan for the most part. Then, week two hits, and they cheat one day.

+Then, they feel bad because they “cheated.” The hope they began the week with turns to despair brought on by the guilt of failure. Failing in their quest to get fit begins a chain reaction of negative self-talk, negative thoughts, and a countenance that screams, “I’m not worth it. I’m just going to fail anyway. There’s no way I’m not going to reach my goal.”

+So, what happens?

+They quit. Guilt, birthed by failure, kills their hope.

+This same mindset can translate into bigger things like career choices and goals. If we decide based on convenience, money, or status, instead of how God created us—our woodnoted-ness—and it ends up leaving us unfulfilled, we resign ourselves to that choice.

+But the truth is, it’s never too late to make a change. It’s never too late to decide to start again.

+Will it be hard? Yes. But so what. That’s life. What matters is not that it’s hard but that we listen to the voice of the Lord in our lives and ask him for guidance down the path he intended for us.

Question to Consider

  1. How do you deal with failure? Spend time journaling about how you react when you fail at something, like a New Year's resolution.

  2. Does the guilt brought on by failure keep you from making decisions based on your faith and trust in what God wants you to do?

  3. Is this formula of failure + guilt = quitting a pattern in your life? How does quitting because of guilt related to the idea of living a hope-filled life? How can we renew our minds when failure gets the best of us?
