When I look around, I find myself in a world created before I was even a thought. I find the thoughts of God lingering in the light of the sun bouncing shadows through beech tree leaves. I find myself brim-full of materials with which to feed my imagination.
And I hear the Creator whisper, “Get to work, Tim.”
And I find my hands shaping things.
The landscape around my home.
The words that build sentences that build paragraphs that form thoughts that fill books.
The paint on canvas in late hours when no one is watching. The offering of my praise uttered in hushed tones during dawn delight.
The pursuit of the Builder. This is what I find awaiting me each morning.
The movement to find new materials that wait for me down hidden paths.
Paths arduous to walk.
Paths of delight.
Paths that require something deep from my soul.
And when I find these treasured materials, I seize them and build with them that I may somehow free the angel in the marble and grasp that low murmur rising to song, luring me on.
Can I reach it? Grasp it? Make it my own?
Reach for it today, my fellow Builders. That quake of Eternity rattling around in your soul. That rumble of the Holiness haunting you, building you, sanctifying you, completing you, over and over again.
Today is the day to build. And no dark force can overcome it because it cannot understand it.
Be a Builder today. And watch The Builder make you his again and again.
The Pillars of the Builder
Aim to cultivate a Builder’s Mindset
Remember C.S. Lewis’s words and contemplate their meaning: We never create. We only build.
A Builder is an artisan, prizing craftsmanship over naked expression.
The Builder does not build to express self. She builds to express worship.
To build carries deep meaning. We adhere to a standard of beauty.
Our work is unaffected by outside circumstances but perseveres toward completion.
To build requires humility and a willingness to come under guidance—a blueprint, mentor, curriculum, and boundaries of the canvas.
The Builder considers the scope and cost of a work and is willing to sacrifice for a result that achieves the Good.
A Builder pursues mastery and discipline, the hallmarks of artisanship.
The real labor of the Builder is to remember, to attend, to come awake, and remain so.
